Photonic crystal elements are completely custom-made and are designed and fabricated in accordance with the required functionality, precision, usable area, etc. of the element. Currently a large portion of the cost of fabrication is the ion beam lithography of the substrate, thus the price is approximately proportional to the area of the element. Great reductions in cost are possible by employing nano-imprinting technology, an area in which we are currently actively involved in R&D. Currently our deposition device is limited to a substrate/element size of 20mm x 20mm, however in principle elements of arbitrary size can be fabricated, only being limited by the size of the deposition chamber.
